FLÖSSIN PRESS RELEASE (fall 2004) :

Flössin's debut "Lead Singer" is a collaboration between Christopher Willits, Zach Hill and Miguel Depedro. Christopher Willits, loved by many for his unique and beautiful melodic/rhythmic processed guitar music, has released material with the labels 12k, Fallt, Sub Rosa, Plop, and Ghostly International. Zach Hill, is the crazed drummer for Sacramento noise-rock heroes Hella, among other projects, and has a strong body of work on Suicide Squeeze. Depedro, better know as sir Kid606, has released a slew of intense music through Mille Plateaux, Ipecac, and Tigerbeat6, of which he is the captain. Flössin was born when Christopher Willits organized a jam sesion between Zach, Miguel, and himself. These three San Francisco Bay Area artists have combined their sounds into a unique blend of music, which confuses and disrupts the space between the trios respective "genres".

In late December 2003 the three met up in San Francisco for a long session of late-night improvisations. "Lead Singer" is a selection of some of these recordings. The combination of these three artists creates a mind-numbing mixture of looping melody, shredding drums, and washes of texture. The music evolves through spurts of chaos and repeating motifs, finding a unique balance between being heavy, delicate, absurd, and beautiful. It is a meld of different styles and approaches to making music within a free improv context, and it showcases the diverse musical cross-pollination that's happening once again in San Francisco.

The session was recorded by Andrew Skikne, of Roma79, using experimental micing techniques to maximize the spontaneous feeling of the CD. The sound is intentionally dirty, overlapping, loud, and live.

In an recent interview by the record label Yacca (Japan), Willits writes :Flössin's music is live, and process-based. On "Lead Singer" we focused on improvisation and multiple time structures inhabiting one another. This is all free improvisation, each time we meet up to play a show or record it's going to be unique and different. In the future there will be different artists coming into Flössin. It may not always be this specific trio, and it may not always be some form of free improvisation. We just have fun with it and see where it goes. "

Between, Christopher, Zach and Miguel's rigorous touring schedules, Flössin will be performing special live performances in support of "Lead Singer".

dedicated to all the lovers.

more :

LEAD SINGER reminds me of the moments when I'm climbing the staircase to my bands practice space and I am able to hear 4 bands practicing at once, all at matching volumes. It's a documentation of the rare times when somehow, the cacophony that echoes threw the staircase seems to be mildly orchestrated - a snare hit in one room triggers a wash of noise in another, or 2 guitars feedback in key with each other. But the sounds on FLÖSSIN's debut full length are not accidental, nor are they created by 18 people all playing shitty alternative rock - they are created by 3 stunning improv musicians, CHRISTOPHER WILLITS, ZACH HILL (HELLA), and MIGUEL DEPEDRO (KID 606), who play off echother like some uber modern jazz trio. The combined history and previous efforts of these three artists becomes the soil from which new, prickly forms emerge. As the direct opponent to "cold and calculated", LEAD SINGER is "warm and spontaneous"; a sonic wash of masterful free-drumming, guitar manipulation, and digital stylings which creates a warmth to bathe in.
